You're right, I should have worded it to say that insularity is one of the things derailing the discussion. I completely agree that the egregious and unacceptable behavior of oil companies is driving the problem. That's a foundational fact. What I was trying to address with this article is one of the reasons why we haven't been able to make any progress on curtailing companies and making meaningful change. I think we need comprehensive regulation and governmental reform, the companies aren't going to monitor themselves or change their behavior willingly.
