You're right, I should have worded it to say that insularity is one of the things derailing the discussion. I completely agree that the egregious and unacceptable behavior of oil companies is driving the problem. That's a foundational fact. What I was trying to address with this article is one of the reasons why we haven't been able to make any progress on curtailing companies and making meaningful change. I think we need comprehensive regulation and governmental reform, the companies aren't going to monitor themselves or change their behavior willingly. Addressing detrimental effects of arrogance and divisive messaging is one step towards moving forward. Thanks for your thoughtful response.
